When you create an account, you can sign in with Sign in with Apple or with an email and password. Sign in with Apple lets you authenticate securely through your Apple ID without sharing extra personal details with us. However you sign in, your session credentials are stored securely in your device's Keychain.
Journal entries, conversation messages with the AI companion, Living Memories, and any photos or media you choose to add are stored so the app can function and so your content is available across your signed-in devices.
If you use voice-to-text, audio is captured temporarily in memory using Apple's Speech framework to produce a text transcript, which you can review and edit before saving. We do not record or store your audio. Depending on your device and language, the speech-to-text conversion may occur on-device or via Apple's speech recognition servers, consistent with standard iOS system behavior.
We track basic usage counters (like daily companion requests) and your subscription tier so the app can apply the correct usage limits.
Dear Me only sends personal content to OpenAI after you are shown an in-app disclosure and explicitly select "Allow & Continue." You can decline, and you can review or revoke this permission at any time from AI & Privacy in the app. Declining or revoking never deletes your journal or Living Memories, and never prevents you from writing or viewing your journal — only AI features (Talk, Release Sessions, and Live Awareness) become unavailable until you allow AI data sharing again.
Once you allow AI data sharing, when you chat with the companion, relevant information — your message, a limited amount of recent conversation, a small number of relevant past journal excerpts, and a few approved Living Memories, plus your companion preferences — is securely sent to OpenAI through our server to generate a reply. "Release Sessions" are handled differently: they send only your current conversation and preferences, and are never saved by Dear Me.
When you ask a question that needs up-to-date, real-world information and AI data sharing is allowed, our server may send only your sanitized question (never your journal content, memories, or prior conversation) to OpenAI's hosted web search to retrieve current information. These results are used only to generate that one reply and are not stored or used to create journal reflections or memories automatically.
Dear Me does not send your photos or images, raw microphone audio, your profile name or birthday, or device identifiers to OpenAI. Voice input is transcribed by Apple's Speech framework, not by OpenAI.
Your journal entries, conversations, Living Memories, and photos are synced to our secure cloud database (hosted on Supabase) so you can access them across sessions. Access to your data is restricted to your account through database-level access controls — other users cannot see your data. Photos are stripped of embedded metadata (such as location data) before upload and stored in a private, access-controlled storage location.
Dear Me+ purchases are processed entirely by Apple through StoreKit. We never see or store your payment details. We only receive and store your subscription status (e.g., active, expired) so we can apply the correct usage limits.
We use authenticated, account-scoped access controls throughout our backend, so your data can only be accessed through your own signed-in session.
We do not use advertising networks or third-party analytics/tracking SDKs.
Dear Me is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Changes will be posted at this URL with an updated "Last updated" date.
